If you’ve been wondering how to make a smoothie bowl that is thick and creamy, you’re in the right place. Today, we’ll learn how to make thick smoothie bowls and how to decorate them to wow your guests or followers.

Smoothie bowls are so beautiful and packed with flavor! They are great for the summer heat and are filled with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

If this is your first time venturing into the world of smoothie bowls, you’ll be surprised at how easy they are to make.

How To Make A Smoothie Bowl

What Is A Smoothie Bowl?

Well, I’ll explain it simply, a smoothie bowl is a creamy bowl of pureed mixture of frozen fruits and or vegetables and milk. A smoothie bowl is also thicker in texture than regular smoothies and is served in a bowl.

The main difference between both is that smoothie bowls are served with assorted fresh fruits, seeds, nuts, and syrup or nut butter toppings.

Why Make Your Own Smoothie Bowls

Well, it’s simple, they are very healthy and do not contain artificial flavors, coloring, preservatives, or additives. You see, store-bought smoothie bowls are packed with all of the above to make them more enticing, and addicting, plus, have a longer shelf life.

Also, ready-made smoothie bowls contain a ton of sugar and are high in calories and saturated fat so why not get organic fruits and freeze them to make your own healthier bowls right?

Fresh organic fruits and vegetables are high in vitamins, minerals, and essential antioxidants and that’s what you want on your plate because we are what we eat.

Finally, you get to choose what you eat! You also get to make something beautiful!

What Goes Into A Smoothie Bowl

This is gonna surprise you so get ready, only 2 main ingredients make up a basic smoothie bowl! Yep, that’s right, you have frozen fruits or veggies and milk!

Thats it! Okay well, we also have the toppings but that’s where you have to get creative. Generally, most smoothie bowl toppings are added based on the main ingredients in the bowl itself.

For example, if you made a smoothie bowl with kiwi and strawberries, you would typically garnish the bowl with fresh kiwi and strawberry slices.

But you could get creative and add granola, shaved almonds or coconut, chocolate chips, etc. It comes down to your preference.

Best Equipment For Smoothie Bowls

Any good blender, sorbet maker, or food processor will do. However, your blender needs to have strong blades because frozen ingredients are very hard to puree especially when less liquid is used.

Not using strong equipment will lead to more time needed, constant stirring, and pulsing. It could also break your blender so keep that in mind.

Tip: if you cannot afford a strong blender, chop your ingredients into very small pieces before freezing them, they will break up easier in the blender.

How To Make A Smoothie Bowl

The very first step in making the perfect smoothie bowl is to have your toppings ready to add as soon as you remove the smoothie from the blender.

That’s because frozen fruits tend to melt quickly, you don’t want that with smoothie bowls so prepping is essential.

Ingredients for a basic smoothie bowl

  • 2 cups of frozen fruit or vegetable | or both
  • 2 tablespoons of milk of choice

To make a smoothie bowl start by adding your fruits and milk into a good blender, and pulse a few times to shake up the ingredients.

add the smoothie bowl ingredients to blender and blend until smooth

Next, turn the blender to low speed and push the fruits down so that they blend evenly.

Turn up the speed and continue this process until you have an extra creamy smoothie with no chunks.

Once you are satisfied, transfer the smoothie into a bowl and add your toppings right away so that your smoothie base does not start to melt.

scoop the smoothie into a bowl

Note: If your blender does not have a tamper, make sure to turn off the blender before using a spoon to push the fruits down, or else you could get hurt or break your blades.

How To Make A Smoothie Bowl Without Frozen Fruit

Don’t have frozen fruits but still want to make a smoothie bowl? Well, you have a lot of options but here is one of my favorite non-frozen smoothie bowl recipes:

  • 1-2 cups of any fresh fruit (low-water fruits)
  • 1/2 cup of oat
  • 1 tablespoon of chia seeds
  • 1/4 cup of Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon of peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons of sweetener (honey, agave, maple syrup)

Simply blend all of the ingredients above, chill for a few hours, add your toppings, and enjoy!

How To Decorate Your Smoothie Bowls

It is really simple to decorate your smoothie bowls but a tip worth noting is to add toppings according to your smoothie base.

For example, if you are making a high-protein smoothie bowl, you would go for high-protein toppings like peanut butter, hemp, or pumpkin seeds and shaved almonds.

I like to add a few slices of fresh fruits, coconut or almond flakes, and some granola, they tend to come out great in photos.

Simply choose any of the common toppings from the list below and let your creativity shine.

Common toppings used to decorate smoothie bowls:

  • nut butter
  • simple syrup
  • maple syrup
  • nuts & seeds – chia-hemp-sunflower-pine nuts-pistachios etc.
  • coconut flakes
  • almond flakes
  • granola
  • muesli
  • fresh fruits

It’s time to decorate! Yay! This is my favorite part of the process and it’s really easy, you’ll see.

Best Time To Eat Smoothie Bowls

Smoothie bowls can be eaten any time of the day but most dieticians recommend having your smoothie bowls early in the morning for breakfast.

However, since most smoothie bowl recipes call for frozen ingredients, it’s not well tolerated by most.

Eating them though, as snacks or a pre-post workout is generally ideal, additionally, you could make them with fresh fruits and veggies instead of frozen.

Tips For The Perfect Smoothie Bowl

Now that we’ve made our first smoothie bowl, here are a few tips to always keep in mind going forward on your smoothie-making journey:

Less Liquid – I don’t care how tempting it may be to add more liquid while processing your ingredients, don’t!

Adding more milk will make your smoothie bowl runny! The perfect smoothie bowl should be thick and creamy.

Frozen ingredients – Try to always use frozen ingredients in your smoothie bowls, adding fresh fruits or veggies will ruin the texture.

With that being said, to thicken your smoothie bowl without frozen fruits, you can use ingredients like chia seeds, oatmeal, yogurt, and even nut butter.

Finally, you can garnish your smoothie bowls with fresh fruits and vegetables.

Continue blending – Making smoothie bowls can sometimes be frustrating so whatever happens, continue blending, stirring, and pulsing.

Don’t stop until you have a perfectly smooth and creamy mixture even if it feels like forever getting there.

How To Store Smoothie Bowls

To store your smoothie bowl, transfer your smoothie base into an airtight freezer-safe container and keep it overnight in the freezer.

Make sure not to add the toppings if you plan on storing and always eat your smoothie bowls within 24 hours.

Once you are ready to serve your smoothie bowl, remove it from the freezer and blend it a little to get rid of ice crystals. (make sure not to overblend or else it will become runny).

Now add your toppings and enjoy!

There you go! You now know how to make the perfect thick and creamy smoothie bowl in a jiffy! I hope this post helped you accomplish your smoothie bowl-making goal.
